September 7th to 29th, 2013

For over 28 years, DeBlois Gallery has been dedicated to its mission to bring contemporary art in a variety of mediums to the Newport art community. In the gallery's new location, its mission remains the same, as the September 2013 show illustrates. This exhibit, "21st Century Expressionism", features exciting works by three prominent artists: Michael Carr (Oils), Ed McAloon (Sculpture) and Edward Williams (Zen Watercolors).

R. Michael Carr

Artist's Statement

My work can be classified as Contemporary Realism; though my subject matter is personal, mundane and rooted in the particular it strives to communicate the universal.  I am preoccupied with fields of color and how they can both harmonize in a beautiful way and mimic a particular light.

Artist's Statement

I am a stained glass artist and sculptor residing in Warren, RI. Having worked in fields such as industrial software engineering, interior design, architectural salvage, and antiques, I have slowly gravitated toward individual creative pursuits.

My interest in stained glass began while working in the architectural salvage industry and led to study at RISD and with local glass artists. Initially I worked predominantly in antique window restoration, but became increasingly motivated to apply my own vision in the medium.

Inspiration for my stained glass work comes from my seaside surroundings as well as vintage graphic design such as record cover art and abstract concepts that motivate me. I utilize traditional kiln fired glass staining techniques in much of my work. Numerous commissioned pieces have been completed for clients to their individual specifications.

I have also been inspired by viewing works of sculpture, which led me to master various kiln forming techniques such as slumping(bending) and fusing of glass. These kiln formed pieces are then assembled into sculptural works in conjunction with wood and various metals. Others works have utilized steam bent wood, as well as cold bent and welded steel.

My work may be viewed at www.mcadesignstudio.net and I can be contacted by email at edmcaloon@mcadesignstudio.net or

The observer should take a few moments to view & absorb the stillness, movement & depth of each Zen watercolor until it opens to you and you experience the silent sound, the Zen moment of each painted image…

I studied art in graduate school while working on my masters degree under James Van Dyke, a well-known 20th century contemporary artist. James has paintings on permanent exhibit at the New York Museum of Modern Art, the NY Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of Modern Art in NYC, the National Gallery in London and the Louvre in Paris. I paint as primal experience – primitive with sticks and knives – 21st Century abstract expressionism. My paintings have been exhibited at the Newport Art Museum, Venetucci Home, The Reign, Spring Bull, and DeBlois Galleries in Newport. The latest work is a series of Zen watercolors – expressionist meditation images.
