After seeing the Hokusai exhibit at the MFA, I became obsessed with Japanese art and papers.

Michael Day

My daily ritual is to walk several miles, watching and listening, trying to capture in light, color, and form in what I see. I have a special affection for wild creatures, especially birds, whose colors, shapes, and poses captivate me, and I have worked hard to identify the birds around me even through their songs. Through my work, I want to share the many faces of nature, the wildness of spirit, and the interplay of light and shadow woven into the tapestry of the natural world. I recently visited the cloud forest and Galapagos Islands in Ecuador, so my newest collection showcases some of those photos.

Valerie Debrule

If I were to check out the American life, I would ask, What happened to compassion, empathy, caretaking? Maybe it was turned over to paid institutions, Maybe in large, extended families a duty to compassion still exists. I hope it will make a comeback.

Mandy Howe

As a landscape painter I spend a lot of time outside, looking at nature, up close, or from far away. I become fascinated with a particular place and then focus on how to paint what I see there. My response leads to a series of paintings that explore the spaces, colors, marks and energies of that place. I try to describe it from different perspectives: the season, time of day or weather that I experience there. A sense of place is present in all my art. It is my ongoing exploration of paint and painting, always anchored in the natural world. Every year I go Out West to visit my brother’s family who live up on the Western Slope of Colorado. The wide open space and huge distances of tha landscape always inspire me. The ancient histories of the continent are echoed in what I see and feel there, the light and colors so different over the landscape they fade in memory when I come home. My “ Out West “ Series is ongoing. Recent mixed media paintings include linoleumcut prints done directly on the canvas, or on plastic applied to the canvas la create layers- of time, notes, textures and drawings. Buffalo Painting #4 includes the actual carved linoleum block rolled up with gold ink and screwed directly onto the painting.

Meredith LeBlanc

I am both an artist and a realtor, living in Newport, RI. Having returned to my easel in recent years, painting is a journey into myself and a meditative process. Feeling the sensuousness of the paint, the vibration of blending the colors, and the emotion that arises as I work has lessened my need for perfection and lets my life flow more naturally. As the daughter of an artist, I was fortunate to have the encouragement to explore being creative in every possible way. My goal as an artist is to share what brings me joy and happiness.

Kathleen Morton

To me producing a piece of art is one of the greatest joys of life. It is what drives me to continue to work, experimenting with different are forms and mediums. Whether making paper, painting with oil, acrylic or watercolor, printmaking or creating and binding my own books I continue in my search for new subjects, materials and inspiration. My love of nature provides a constant stimulus. I usually begin with a pile of leaves, bark, shells or feathers or photos. The colors and textures test my ability to match and use them in my own creations.

Karen Nash

I've always said that the materials I use in my assemblage have a way of talking to me, but none quite like this rock from the west shore of Portsmouth. This rock somehow got into my head, telling me to use it in another sculpture, since disassembled. But the rock still hung around, nagging me, so I've decided to let it have its say once and for all, about the island that birthed it over so many millenia. Hence the outline of Aquidneck Island arising like ritual smoke from the bedrock.

Michael O'Donnell

My inner art pendulum has swung towards representation, leaving abstraction for a bit. I can’t help it. When I get an idea for an image, I have to follow it up. Some of these works incorporate music related themes, and they all spring from life experiences and relationships.

My recent monoprints are inspired by the sights, shadows and patterns of the natural world around me. This Daffodil series began with hand cut stencils that were inked on multiple plates and overprinted many times to create these "one of a kind" monoprints.

Here I am once again in a place that I love. The beauty of this natural world inspires and excites me. The ocean meets the sky and reveals the day, the rocky shore speaks to me of endless time and the trees bend with the wind. I need to draw and paint it all.
